Typically a semi gloss is used on trim and interior doors. Eggshell is often used on walls, is very durable and can be easily washed. Flatter paints will make touch-ups easier. Gloss surfaces are least porous and offer more mold resistance.

Gloss: Toughest, most durable types of paint, Tends to highlight any surface characteristics. Popular on woodwork and trim
Exterior Paints are either oil or alkyd based paints or water based latex paint. Oil based paints dry slower, and is typically used when painting over an existing oil based paint. Latex shouldn’t be applied over an oil based paint as it will peel.
Latex paint is more popular today as its easily applied, and is tools are easily cleaned. It expands and contracts with seasonal conditions and is durable under many conditions.
There are Four Major Types of Stains
Semi Solid: partially covers the wood grain by having less pigment than solid color. Recoat every 2-4 years
Clear Toner: uses finely ground iron pigments to block the sun, allows the grain to come through and gives a slight tint. Can’t peel, but needs to be recoated annually.
Solid Color: More like a flat paint, it hides the wood grain but not the wood texture. Can peel if not properly applied. Recoat every 5-7 years.
Semitransparent: Adds enough pigment to change the wood color, but the grain is still visible. Can’t peel. Recoat every 2-3 years.
